Our Guest Speaker:
Cameron Girdlestone | Australia Rower & 2016 Olympic Silver Medallist
Cameron Girdlestone made his Olympic debut at Rio, rounding out an evenly balanced men’s Quadruple Scull that boasts experience and fresh talent. The 28-year-old discovered the sport of rowing in 2003 when he made the switch from cricket and only two years later competed in the men’s four at the Junior World Championships in Germany.

The Sydney-sider contested the U23 World Championships in 2007 and then made his first senior team in 2014. At the first World Cup of that year in Sydney, Girdlestone took gold in the quad scull and silver in the pair and went on to compete in the quad scull at World Cup 3 and the 2014 World Championships.

The quad secured a prime lane three position in the A final after blitzing their heat, but the reigning World and Olympic Champions, Germany were not to be discounted in lane one. As they approached the final 500 metres, the Australians continued to hunt down the Germans and as they approached the line the crew were within touching distance of the reigning champions. Despite going in as favourites , it wasn’t to be for the Australians as they fell 1.15sec short to take home the silver medal, with Germany winning gold and Estonia bronze.
Girdlestone secured a silver medal at the 2015 World Championships in France, continuing to demonstrate the strength of the Australian men’s quad scull crew. The PDHPE teacher kicked off the 2016 season with a bang as he was crowned Male Single Scull Champion of Australia at the Sydney International Rowing Regatta.

Cameron’s impressive record of achievement is driven by a level of self-motivation, matched only by his fierce determination, and captured by his motto:
“I TRAIN TO ROW, I ROW TO RACE, I RACE TO WIN
Which translates into his commitment to a process – to train harder, row faster and race to win, either as a single sculler or as a member of a high performance crew.
